Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (“ABCRC” or “we”) understands and appreciate the concerns that suppliers, customers, subscribers and other members of the public with whom we interact (“you” or “your”) may have about personal information gathered electronically by us when you access and use the websites, platforms or applications that ABCRC owns, operates or controls (our “sites”).
ABCRC strives to collect personal information only through lawful and transparent means, to use such personal information with the consent of the relevant individual or as authorized or required by law, and to ensure the confidentiality of your personal information in accordance with the principles set forth in Canadian privacy legislation (PIPEDA). Your use of our sites implies your consent to the collection practices detailed herein. If at any time you no longer agree to the terms of this Privacy Commitment or any other privacy related terms that we have communicated to you, please do not use or interact with our sites, contests or services.

- We inform you of the purposes for which your personal information is collected at or before the time the information is collected.
- We only collect personal information relevant for the purposes that it is to be used.
- We use and disclose personal information only for the purposes previously identified unless you provide us with your consent or by the authority of law.
- We keep your personal information only for as long as is necessary, or as required by law.
- We strive to protect your personal information against loss or unauthorized access, destruction, use, modification, or disclosure. We use physical, technical, and administrative safeguards that are appropriate to the sensitivity of the information.
- We make specific information about our practices and policies with respect to the management of personal information readily available to you.

- We amend your personal information when it is found to be inaccurate or incomplete.
- We are responsible for the personal information under our control. ABCRC’s Privacy Officer oversees a privacy management program that is designed to protect your personal information.
Personal Information – We may collect personal information that you willingly provide when using our sites, including:
- Name: To personalize your experience.
- Email address: To communicate with you and send updates.
- Address and/or postal code: When necessary for specific services.
- Phone number: To contact you, if required.
- Other data you provide voluntarily: Information that might be collected during account registration, subscription to newsletters, contest entry or when you contact us, such as demographic data, opinions, preferences, and interactions with our and our partners’ platforms and services in order to offer you content, products and services that are more relevant for you.
Derivative Data (automatically collected information) – When you access our website, certain information is automatically collected, including (but not limited to):
- IP Address: For security and analytics.
- Browser Type: To optimize your browsing experience.
- Operating System: To ensure compatibility.
- Referring URLs: To understand how you found our website.
- Pages Visited: For site improvement and analytics.
ABCRC will not use or disclose your personal information for purposes other than those for which it was collected, as outlined below, except with the consent an individual or as required by law or law enforcement and in emergency situations.
We employ your data for various purposes:
- To provide services: We use your personal information to deliver the services you request and continually enhance your experience on our sites.
- For personalization: We may personalize your site experiences based on the data we collect to make your interactions more relevant and enjoyable.
- To facilitate communication: Your contact information allows us to respond to your inquiries, provide updates, and engage with you.

The following are common examples where we may collect and use your personal information:
- Contest entry – We collect personal information from you to facilitate your contest entry, confirm your eligibility, distribute contest prizes, track compliance with official rules and regulations, and improve our services and for advertising or marketing purposes. We will only publish a contest winner’s name and/or photograph after receiving prior written consent from the winner (or the winner’s legal parent or guardian) and the appropriate, fully completed release forms.
- Newsletters and other direct communications – We offer many ways for our suppliers, customers and audiences to engage with us, including receiving newsletters and e-mails from us. We may ask you to provide us with personal information in order to administer your subscription and to offer you content that is relevant to you.
- User accounts – ABCRC offers services that may require you to set up a user account in order to administer a program, provide a service, or fulfill a transaction between us and you, (for example, if you accept an infrastructure donation through one of our programs). All users can see, edit, or delete the personal information in their profile at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information. If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.
- Feedback and comments – In some cases, you may communicate directly with us in relation to our programs or contests, to provide feedback or to express concerns. In those cases, we may collect personal information from you for purposes of establishing your identity and to determine the nature of an issue. If you send an e-mail to us through one of our sites, we will collect your e-mail address and the full content of your e-mail, including attached files, and any other information you provide.
- Research and marketing studies – We occasionally conduct research studies and/or focus groups involving volunteer participants to inform our business strategies, to understand trends and to gauge public sentiment. For these purposes, we may collect a variety of personal information in connection with a research study or focus group, depending on the nature of the underlying study.
- Social Media and Sharing – We may use and display your full name, email address and/or social handle when you send an email notification to a friend through one of our sites, or the social network from which you have connected to the website or application (such as in an invitation to view our content or when sharing our content your content). Social media platforms may collect your personal information separately from us.
In the event that you provide a friend’s name and email address, you represent that you have their consent, and you agree to provide them with the information contained in this Privacy Commitment, exempting us from any liability in this regard. However, we may carry out the necessary verifications to verify this fact, adopting the corresponding due diligence measures, in accordance with applicable regulations.
The security of your data is our top priority.
- We implement robust security measures to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration or destruction. These measures include encryption, access controls and regular security assessments. Data is only accessible to our employees, who are bound by strict confidentiality agreements and our corporate Privacy Policy.
- We do not sell, trade, or transfer your personal information to third parties without your consent. However, we may share your data with trusted service providers who assist us in operating our sites, subject to strict confidentiality agreements. As well, comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. ABCRC will only retain personal information as long as necessary for the fulfillment of those purposes or as required by law.
- If you upload images to our sites, we recommend that you avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included, as other visitors to the website can download and extract location data from images.
- Be aware that articles on our sites may include embedded content (e.g., videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
No sensitive personal information is collected, stored in, or gathered from these cookies or other technologies. Rather, these technologies allow us to recognize returning visitors for a better login experience, facilitate visitor access to (and use of) the sites, track general usage patterns that drive content and service improvement, allow users to select and prioritize their preferences, and ensure that content standards of the site are rigorously upheld.
You can manage your cookie preferences through your browser settings. Please note that if you do not accept a cookie from our sites, it may limit our ability to customize and improve our site features and decrease functionality.
- Access: You can request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correction: If you believe the personal information we hold about you is inaccurate or incomplete, you can request corrections.
- Deletion: You can request the deletion of your personal information. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
- Objection: You have the right to object to the processing of your personal information for certain purposes, such as direct marketing.
- Data Portability: You can request your personal information in a structured, commonly used, and machine-readable format.
We may periodically update this Privacy Commitment to reflect changes in our practices or applicable legislation.
